Meteorite fragments spark Russia’s newest gold rush

By Cecilia Jamasmie

Barely a day after a meteor streaked across Russia’s sky and exploded with the force of an atomic bomb, gold hunters were out in force searching for pieces to sell.

According to Mail Online the bits are in high demand by wealthy collectors, such as filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who are posting wanted ads online. This has unleashed an even larger number of offers. A two-centimetre fragment, for instance, was going for approximately $16.60, on the online store Aito.ru, though there was little to suggest that the piece was authentic.

A 23cm fragment of the Seymchan meteorite found in Siberia in 1960 sold in New York for $43,750 in October.
